“There’s a reason Christopher Bruce’s Ghost Dances remains so popular, even 35 years after its creation. A heartfelt tribute to the victims of political oppression in South America (the work was originally inspired by the horrors of the Pinochet regime in Chile), it has everything going for it. Great music (South American folk arranged by Nicholas Mojsiejenko), fantastic costumes by Belinda Scarlett (the three ghost dancers are wonderfully ghoulish in their skull masks) and choreography that is not only well crafted, but exciting in its forward momentum.”
Belinda designed the costumes for Christopher Bruce's Ghost Dances which is one of the most celebrated pieces of its generation.
Since its debut at the Theatre Royal Bristol on 3 July 1981, Ghost Dances has been performed by NEDERLANDS DANS THEATRE and AUSTRALIAN DANCE THEATRE in 1982; CULLBERG BALLET, Stockholm in 1983; ZURICH OPERA HOUSE and GULBENKIAN BALLET, Lisbon in 1985; HOUSTON BALLET, Texas in 1988; GENEVA BALLET in 1991; BALLET WEST, Salt Lake City in 2002; and QUEENSLAND BALLET in 2017. It has been revived by RAMBERT DANCE COMPANY in 1999 and 2016, and shown on Channel 4 in 1982 and BBC 2 in 2000.
Belinda's costume designs were shown in the exhibition to celebrate “Rambert at 75” at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden in 2001.
Belinda studied Textiles at Camberwell School of Art and Stage Design at the Slade School of Fine Art.
Her costume designs include: “Figures of Wind” and “Room to Dance” choreographed by Cliff Keuter for Ballet Rambert; “The Beggars’ Opera” by John Gay and “Punch and Judy” by Harrison Birtwistle for Opera Factory London, also shown on Channel 4; “La Callisto” by Cavalli and “The Knot Garden” by Sir Michael Tippett For Opera Factory London Sinfonietta at the Royal Court Theatre, also shown on Channel 4.
Set and Costume designs include “Eight Songs for a Mad King” by Peter Maxwell Davies and “Aventures et Nouvelles Aventures” by Ligeti for Theatre Musical De Paris and Ensemble Intercontemporien, conducted by Pierre Boulez, at the Chatelet Theatre, Paris.
